Renault R16

Parts for Vintage Renault R 16 Vehicle

The genesis of the Renault 16 was not straightforward. The company was looking to replace its Renault Frégate and offer a car with lower taxes than the Rambler. Thus, studies leading to cars with V8 or inline 6-cylinder engines were abandoned. However, the latter, already well advanced, became the basis for the Cléon Alu inline 4-cylinder engine that debuted with the Renault 16.

The style of the car presented at the end of 1964 was created by Philippe Charbonneaux. Its official launch took place at the Geneva Motor Show in 1965. Front-wheel drive, a 55 hp front engine, a tailgate, and a high interior volume allowed it to win the title of Car of the Year in 1966.

In the early years, the Renault 16 underwent little change, with tweaks to the wheels, cowl vent covers, and bumper height.

The Evolutions of the Renault R16

In 1968, the R16 TS swapped the 1470 cm³ for a 1565 with a dual carburetor and a hemispherical cylinder head with 83 hp. It received two long-range lights and specific rims.
The TA arrived the following year with an automatic gearbox but remained in the catalog for only one year.
Restyled in 1970, the Renault 16 saw the arrival of a new top-of-the-line version in 1973 with the TX, its 1647 cm³, and its 93 hp. Four headlights at the front, a small spoiler, and "Gordini" rims set it apart.
The grille adopted a black plastic from 1974, and the different versions began to be removed from the catalog. The TL and TX remained until 1980, and Renault had then produced 1.8 million Renault 16s.

The R16 is a car that is still often seen at vintage car gatherings. A car that can travel miles without worry, it was made for that, and its restoration would be a good idea. That is why we offer you a wide selection of parts:
